Dr Thabisa Mabusela is a Clinical Psychologist and lecturer in the Department of Psychology. She has practiced as a Clinical Psychologist for just over 20 years before joining academia about 6 years ago. Her research interests are in the areas of child & adolescent psychopathology; childhood disorders and impact; psychometric testing in South Africa; sexual abuse & trauma and child adoption issues, with experience in both qualitative and quantitative research.
She is currently supervising students at both Masters and PhD level, and has also examined Masters research from other Universities in the country. She has collaborated in a publication within the department, as well as in research with colleagues from other departments. Thabisa has spent the last few years at the departmentally linked Missionvale Psychology Community Clinic, overseeing engagement programs and services that are focused on making a difference in the communities, NGOs and schools around the Missionvale area and beyond, through the provision of much needed psychological and psychoeducational services.
Her academic responsibilities extend both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including clinical supervision within the professional training programs run by the Department of Psychology. This is achieved through employment of both traditional and innovative teaching strategies that enhance active learning for both the student and lecturer.
